Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - Free Weekend

Good morrow m'lord, doth thou yearn for bloody battles and castle sieges? Yes? Well look no further than Steam's latest free weekend!

That's right, Steam is at it again, with it's free weekend for Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. This game was released in October 2012, and although I'd seen snippets of game footage and screenshots, I wasn't tempted enough to pick up a copy, until today.

As one of two different factions, you're thrown into battle in various standard game modes such as Team Deathmatch, Free For All and King of the Hill. However there are one or two other modes that make the game a little more interesting - for example my favourite, Team Objective, which sees you and your fellow men at arms either trying to besiege a castle to kill it's King, or defend that same castle and repel the invaders.

Someone, somewhere, needs to make a Game of Thrones mod or DLC - I know plenty of folks who'd like to kill King Joffrey.

You can play as one of four different classes, ranging from the low armoured Archer, to the high armoured, but slow, Knight. Each class can be outfitted with a range of different weapons and items depending on how you want to play.

The gameplay is fast and tense, as you find yourself frantically trying to dodge and block your enemies' incoming sword swings to keep your limbs intact, whilst also trying to get the odd sword swing of your own in there too. Oh yeah, and in the middle of all that you'll have arrows, siege weapons and huge boiling cauldrons of oil to look out for too. It pays to work together and cover eachother's backs, as often I discovered that becoming surrounded by enemies can happen in an instant and you'll soon be their fleshy pin cushion.

Trying not to hit your allies is quite the challenge - luckily I got away with the odd stray arrow here and there.

You can play the game, completely free, until Monday 27 May at 10am PST (6pm BST). On top of that, the game is also 66% off (£6.45/$8.49), so if you like what you've seen over this weekend why not pick it up and begin talking all Medieval-style like me, squire.

Have you played Chivarly - what do you like or dislike about it? What's your favourite class to play as? And hast thou begun to speak like a Medieval lord?
